Different laws and the way they carry conflicts across state borders as women try to navigate options for their wellbeing are illustrated in examples of cases where medical care has been inadequate or mishandled and led to scrutiny by the healthcare and judicial system. Safeguards, legislation and increased reporting efforts are suggested as necessary actions to ensure the protections of at-risk newborns and expecting mothers in the nation.
